Overview:

Synthesis is a web-based document editor app that allows users to create, edit, and collaborate on various types of documents. The app's previous design had significant usability issues, including a lack of information architecture, poor navigation, subpar visual design, and repetitive tasks for users. This case study focuses on the redesign of Synthesis to address these problems and enhance the overall user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) of the application.

Research:

Conducted user research to understand the pain points, needs, and expectations of Synthesis users. Gathered qualitative and quantitative data through surveys, interviews, and user feedback.

Background

Key Insights:

Insight #1

Users found it difficult to locate features and tools within the app due to unclear organization and labeling of functions.

Insight #2

The app lacked a cohesive and intuitive navigation system, resulting in users getting lost and struggling to find desired features quickly.

Insight #3

The visual design of Synthesis was outdated and unappealing, negatively impacting the overall user experience. The lack of visual hierarchy made it challenging to focus on essential elements.

Insight #4

Users frequently encountered repetitive tasks, such as manual saving or exporting documents, which led to frustration and decreased productivity.

Design Process:

1. Information Architecture: Developed a clear and logical information architecture by categorizing features and tools into meaningful sections.

2. Streamlined Navigation: Implemented a consistent and intuitive navigation system that enables users to access features easily.

3. Visual Design: Created a modern and visually appealing design that aligns with the app's purpose and target audience.

4. Task Automation: Identified repetitive tasks and implemented automation features to reduce user effort. For example, introduced auto-saving functionality and automatic version control.
